The Black route splits from the Red just after Jimmy's
Hill. It's tough from the outset with a steep and narrow
climb that twists through the many tree stumps that
litter this harvested area of forest. But to rub salt in
the wound, you have to navigate Devil's Elbow. It's only
a few metres long, but it's steep, it's rocky, and it's
rarely cleared.
Next up is For Peat's Sake. 25 metres of board walk, but
it's only 40 centimetres wide. Oh, and it's not straight
or level either.
Head on up to the Black Route's highest point, Stumpy
Hill, and it's down hill all the way to the end. This
descent is full on rock gardens, jumps, and drops.
Forrest's Dive and Adder Nuff are super twisty, squeezing
you through narrow gaps between trees, then finish off
with a gap jump on Rattlesnake.
You end up on Forest Drive which you must take back to
the trail head, but if you feel like you need more
thrills, you can take the first forest track up to the
right, and rejoin the final sections of Red Trail, at
Shake, Rattle 'n' Roll. It's worth it.
