The Deadwater Trail at Kielder opened in 2007, having been built by a group of volunteer trail builders known as the Kielder Trail Reavers.

The main 15km Red grade route is for intermediate level mountain bikers, while the 2km Black grade section is for expert riders who wish to push themselves further.

But before you go anywhere, you should start with the skills loop at the trail head. With blue, red and black options, they give you a taster for what to expect out on the main trail.

Allow 2-3 hours to complete the full route, though the more determined will take less. The cost of parking is £3, which gives you a whole days stay.

If bike hire is what you're after, head to
The Bike Place, Kielder. From here you can also get the low down on the other cycle routes in the Kielder area.

Work is well underway on the new trails at Kielder. The new Blue route is already taking shape, in the forest to the North East of Kielder village, and clearing has started on the new Red route which will connect with the Scottish Border towards Newcastleton. Plans for these routes are available on the downloads page, and all construction will be completed by the end of 2008.
